More than 60,000 hits in its first three days.

“The Audacity of Despair,” David Simon’s blog of past writings and current musings, hit the web with absolutely no fanfare or marketing effort whatsoever. There was some little blow up over a comment he made in an interview, and as I had suggested years ago that he purchase www.davidsimon.com for his own use someday, it seemed time to get something up so he could, when he liked, speak for himself.

And so it goes. It’s a wonderful blog, full of somewhat random but always interesting prose, and though he doesn’t write often, it makes for a great read.

In terms of design, I pretty much got to do as I liked, which meant following my personal aesthetic: simple, elegant. For a former newspaperman who will always be, in some ways, just that, black and white seemed appropriate. And for the “Audacity” header, Poe’s Raven seemed the right touch, a bit Baltimore, and a bit stark. I’d like to see that design on a coffee cup…

But the rest is all David, unadulterated, through and through. I like to joke that it was the fastest most successful blog launch I’d ever been a part of, but in truth, it was years of work, all his. A 20-year “overnight success” simply by doing what he does best: think, and write. Congrats, my friend.

I’m very proud to announce the launch of www.anseladams.com. This was entirely custom site built on a WordPress platform. It includes a lot of technically interesting challenges, including URLs that lead anywhere we say, and thumbnails that do NOT crop images, ever…especially those of Ansel Adams. I was so honored to work with this foundation and with Matthew Adams on the site.

Given my love of letterpress one would think I’d do a Battle of the Bands poster using old school design, but it just feels like those are everywhere now. And there are so many music posters in New Orleans, so I went in a somewhat different direction.

I hope they get a great turnout; they are raising money for some good causes. It should be a GREAT show and a lot of fun.

Among the most prestigious awards in graphic design, Print Magazine’s Design Annual awards are great fun to win. What a thrill is is to see our work among the best work of the year.

When we found out our annual holiday letterpress project, “Hoppy Halidays,” had won a coveted Regional Design award, and we were so hoppin’ happy about it, we scared the folks in the adjoining studio. The round “drink mat,” letterpressed Holiday Mailing was designed to be reused as tree decoration or gift tag (or under that tall glass of holiday scotch, obviously, if that struck you). Concept and Illustration by Kayle Simon and letterpress printed in 3 colors (black, red, and white) using our own beloved Oldstyle Pilot Printing press from about 1886.
